It's Time To Rock Out With These Awesome Rock Bands

Written by Nicole Mendes

Having been a part of the Chicago rock circuit since 2004, in one way or another, Veilside has over ten years of experience under their belts. Described as a 'no frills hard rock band', the band has shared the stage with notable acts including Halestorm, Five Finger Death Punch, Alter Bridge and Crossfade. In addition to playing with bigger acts, Veilside promote causes that are close to their hearts and play children's charity events regularly. To date, the band has three releases - two EPs and one full-length album.

Veilside is:

Tony Engel on lead vocals.
Russ Odean on guitar and backing vocals.
Sharon Cline on guitar and backing vocals.
Ron Thomas on drums and backing vocals.
Bob Hilton on bass.

Veilside released a highly anticipated full-length album in 2018 entitled 'Eclipse'. - Veilside's Facebook account is well-maintained with regular posts focusing on promotion of shows. The band have provided an array of videos and pictures, so visitors are able to see Veilside in their onstage element! A Reverbnation band profile widget is available giving visitors access to music, press, and focus on the gig information. Overall, this is a great account with contact information, background information and a link to their official website clearly available. - I have no qualms in saying that Veilside's official website is one of my favourite band websites to date. The menu clearly places each aspect of the band into a specific section, even links to lyrics, personal comments and affiliate links. I enjoy the personal comments and affiliate links as it shows how much they care about engaging with the music community. A store is available, detailed background history, and both a contact box with direct email (if you prefer this option). I love it!

Secondhand Habit

The saying goes that all Canadians are super-sweet and really friendly, but that doesn't mean they have to be quiet! A force to be reckoned with, Secondhand Habit is a high voltage rock 'n' roll threesome raging from Victoria, BC. Compared to Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Guns 'N' Roses, the band has performed several national tours, performed at the Oasis Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in Stanley Park, and opened for acts such as Dead Quiet. To date, the band has released one EP entitled 'From The Ashes'.

Secondhand Habit is:

Jesse Turner on guitar and lead vocals.
Jon Yellowlees on lead guitar and backing vocals.
Levi Megebir on bass.
Skyler Wilson on drums.

In June of this year, Secondhand Habit released their single 'Bad Habit'. - Secondhand Habit's Facebook account is well-maintained with some personal commentary added to their event promo posts. They also have several photographs with videos that are more personal allowing visitors an insight into the band. A Reverbnation band profile is available giving visitors access to music, official videos, event details and press quotes. My problem lies with their 'about' page - background information, contact details and a link to their official website is available; however, it would be useful to have links to other social media accounts and please update the band members. - Secondhand habit use the basic Bandcamp profile as their official website. An economic and beneficial option, this focuses primarily on the sales of albums with little information about the band itself. There are links to their social media accounts, a contact link, and merchandise options; however, it would be nice to read some more about the band (particularly from a press perspective).

While Newborn is described as 'alternative rock', they are anything but. Difficult to place in an genre, or the sub-genres, this threesome from Brooklyn, NY, are proving that music is not about labels but about the music. They have a diverse and unique sound entrancing listeners across the globe, so no-one really cares what they're called. The band has released two well-received EPs and has played in some of New York's most well-known venues, such as Stage 48 and Irving Plaza.

Newborn is:

Allen James on vocals and guitar.
Eric Weglicki on bass.
Dave Goldenberg on drums.

Newborn released a new single in October, 2018, entitled 'Shadow of Your Heart'. - Newborn's official band website is well presented and focuses greatly on the audio-visual side of their band. The menu is clearly located with official videos, playlists and photographs available; in fact, the photo section has a link to their Instagram. The background information is concise and easy to follow, which is a relief after reading many profiles. The band also has a separate contact page with a box and various direct emails. In addition to the social media account widget in the menu, I also enjoyed the press kit download on each page.

Son Of Prey

Son of Prey is a five-piece alternative rock band hailing from the Northern European side of the world - Denmark to be specific. When people think of Danes, we consider Vikings, and Son of Prey are as powerful in their music. A compelling sound driven by strong vocals and based on powerful themes, they are not one to miss if you're into good music. To date, they have released two EPs.

Son of Prey is:

Joakim Moe Jensen
Mikas Merrild
Simon L. R. Jørgensen
Thomas Waarkjær
Jakob Nørager Christensen

Son of Prey will be releasing a new EP soon entitled 'Alison'. - Son of Prey have a somewhat well-maintained Facebook account posting important information when necessary. Videos and photographs are available for visitors to peruse, and there are more personal images/videos to view making it an engaging experience. The account has a Reverbnation band profile, so there is access to music and upcoming events. I find it disappointing that the account lacks links to other social media accounts, and only basic background information is available. The greatest problem I have with this account, and this may be a personal preference, is the video header! As a person with photosensitivity, it's just annoying to have to deal with a fast moving image when trying to read information.
