The States – Cathedral EP Review

Written by Anselm Anderson

The States are a Five - Piece Arena Rock act from Orlando, Florida. The band currently consists of Joshua Jacobs ( Vocals), Ritchie Sears ( Bass), Matthew Weisberg ( Lead Guitar), Bryan Glenn ( Drums) and Walker Glifford ( Keys).

Jacobs, Sears and Weisberg formed the band as an acoustic trio before meeting Glenn that altered the band’s sound. The States toured Florida for a year before acquiring Glifford to become a Five- piece. They soon released single As Cruel as Youth before entering the Pioneer Studios in Cassleberry, Florida to record EP Cathedral, which was released last year to critical acclaim, was described by Show is to go as “ brilliantly refreshing. Its five songs pour through your car’s shotty speakers on repeat breathing oxygen to your aspirations. “. This reviewer decided to have a listen to discover more about the music behind the band.

Opener Circles begins with the upbeat, jangly chords that immediately catch the listener unaware. Jacobs husky vocals sing with anthemic applause. This track about reflects in the screeching lead guitar breaks and melodic texture that could easily become a favourite amongst the summer festival crowds.

Next track is the haunting Gloria , A song about a break up. Glifford’s atmospheric keys add a dark, mournful mood over Jacob’s heart- rendering vocals that burst into life towards the end . The song’s pop- hooks and soaring breakdowns create a sense of closure that leaves the listener wanting to know more.

Wilder Things was featured on the closing credits of Oscar – nominated film Contract. This is a harrowing and evocative track, enriched with warmth and feeling that shares similarities to the Northern Irish act Snow Patrol in how it entices these attributes.

Danger continues with the same mood as previous track. Jacob’s powerful vocals standout with raw emotion proves this point.

And Finally, The City ends with the more fitting song to wrap up this first appearance for the band. A song stirring with electric guitars and keys that create a sense of finality. Glenn’s powerful drumming and driving rhythm supplement Jacobs on the vocals. A track that can be a radio hit worldwide. The States’ strong song writing and evocative vocals could propel them to be a hit at festivals across Europe.

They will be releasing their first full length album this spring/ summer.
